Welcome to Episode 14 of the Birding Tools Podcast.

This week on the Birding Tools podcast, we’ll be outlining your birding goals and resolutions, not just for 2021 but for this stage in your birding journey. And we’ll walk through how to make the ultimate birding destination wish list.

These are two things I personally love setting out for myself and planning on because it allows me to focus on what I love (birding) as well as look forward to where I can go birding next.

A quick recap:

  • Set some new birding goals for yourself in the new year – this can be something as easy as adding just ONE new bird to your life list or learning to use your field guide to your best advantage.
  • Consider creating your own birding destination list, both for local birding destinations and far afield destinations. You’ll see which places you want to visit or species you want to see and determine the best time of year to see that bird in which location.

Here’s how the episode goes

[1:30] Some examples of different birding goals you could set for yourself are learning how to use eBird, setting up a more bird-friendly space in your yard or neighborhood, or adding new birds to your life list.

[6:00] My birding goals are to learn all my local birds by sight and sound by springtime and to map out and visit a new birding destination in the area every month over the next year.

[7:25] Create a birding destination wish list, showing the species you want to see and the most optimal time of year to actually see that species.

[12:50] See hordes of birds at one time, which might not add a ton of new birds to your life list, but you’ll get a cool birding experience.

[13:50] Focusing on multitudes of habitats and migration times will optimize the total number of bird species you see at one time.

[15:20] Select a destination based on being able to see a specific charismatic bird, which likely has more tour opportunities or information about how best to see these kinds of birds.
